20 Cars That Always Seem to Be Tailgating You

20 Cars That Always Seem to Be Tailgating You

Somehow, They’re Always Right Behind You

Every driver has experienced that moment when a car appears in the rearview mirror and seems determined to occupy the smallest possible amount of space between your bumper and theirs. Certain models have developed reputations for showing up in exactly that situation. Of course, no vehicle automatically turns its owner into an impatient driver, but some badges seem to appear back there more often than others. Here are 20 car models most associated with tailgating.

1. BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series has long carried a sporty reputation, attracting drivers who like a spirited ride. On the highway, it can feel like one appears behind you the second traffic opens up. Plenty of 3 Series owners drive perfectly normally, but the car’s image has helped turn it into a running joke about aggressive lane changes and close following.

2. Ford F-150

America’s best-selling pickup naturally spends a lot of time on the road, so you’re bound to encounter plenty of them. Some F-150 drivers also seem to prefer keeping a much shorter gap than the size of the truck would suggest, especially on country roads, at night, with their high beams turned on. The tall grille can make even a reasonable following distance look intimidating from a smaller car.

3. Dodge Charger

The Charger has the kind of styling and performance reputation that encourages a more aggressive driving image. You’ll often see one moving briskly through traffic, especially in higher-performance trims that practically advertise their horsepower. That doesn’t mean every Charger driver is impatient, but the car does seem unusually comfortable in the left lane.

4. Ram 1500

Ram trucks are large, powerful, and common enough that almost everyone has had one appear behind them at some point. The combination of a tall front end and bright headlights can make close following especially noticeable at night. You probably won’t forget there’s a Ram behind you once it gets there.

5. Nissan Altima

The Nissan Altima has developed an oddly specific online reputation for unpredictable and aggressive driving. Memes aside, the model is extremely common, affordable, and used by a wide range of drivers, which naturally increases how often you’ll encounter one. Whether the stereotype is fair or not, plenty of people have stories involving an Altima appearing suddenly in the mirror.

6. Audi A4

An Audi A4 doesn’t always announce itself with noise or flashy styling, which can make its arrival behind you feel surprisingly sudden. The car’s smooth power and highway-focused character make higher speeds feel fairly effortless. Some drivers seem to translate that refinement into a desire to keep traffic moving at their preferred pace.

7. Chevrolet Silverado

The Silverado grille is another all-too-familiar sight in the rearview mirror, riding uncomfortably close to your tail. Because these trucks sit high, their headlights can be particularly noticeable when they’re following closely after dark. Add in the fact that many are driven on highways and long commutes, and you’ve got plenty of opportunities for impatient encounters.

8. Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The C-Class may look refined and understated, but some drivers seem to treat that three-pointed star as permission to travel a little faster than everyone else. Its comfortable ride and strong engines can encourage enthusiastic driving. You may notice one sitting behind you without much drama, just steadily waiting for you to clear the lane.

9. Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Grand Cherokee has enough power to attract drivers who like to drive a little too speedily. On highways, these SUVs often seem to appear quickly and settle into a surprisingly close following distance. Their upright front ends also make them look larger in the mirror than some other midsize SUVs. Even when the driver isn’t being especially aggressive, the visual effect can make you feel a little rushed.

10. Tesla Model 3

The Model 3 can accelerate quickly and quietly, which means it sometimes appears behind you before you’ve even noticed it approaching. Many drivers appreciate the car for efficiency and technology, while others clearly enjoy the performance available with a quick press of the accelerator. Its polished appearance doesn’t necessarily scream aggression, but the closing speed can tell a different story.

11. Honda Civic Si

The Civic Si has long appealed to drivers who enjoy something sporty without spending luxury-car money. Its enthusiastic fan base includes plenty of people who like a spirited drive, particularly on highways and winding roads. That can occasionally translate into a Civic sitting closer behind you than you’d like.

12. Subaru WRX

The WRX has always had a strong connection to performance culture, and many owners buy one specifically because they enjoy driving. Its turbocharged power and all-wheel drive make it feel confident in situations where other cars might slow down. As a result, you’ll sometimes spot one skirting its way through traffic with noticeable determination.

13. Dodge Challenger

The Challenger is big, loud, and available with engines that make ordinary commuting feel almost beside the point. Drivers who choose one often appreciate straight-line speed, and some seem eager to use it, even when the lane isn't especially clear. Its wide front end can look especially imposing when it’s sitting close behind a smaller vehicle.

14. Volkswagen GTI

The GTI looks sensible enough to blend into normal traffic, but its personality has always leaned toward enthusiastic driving. Owners often value the fact that it’s both useful and quick, which makes it popular among people who actually enjoy being behind the wheel, even if they're just driving to the grocery store. That can mean a GTI is more likely than the average hatchback to be waiting impatiently behind slower traffic.

15. Toyota Tacoma

Tacomas are everywhere, especially in areas where pickups are part of daily life. Many are lifted or fitted with larger tires, which makes them look even more imposing from the perspective of the car ahead. Tacoma drivers seem particularly comfortable keeping a close gap while waiting for a chance to pass.

16. Infiniti Q50

The Q50 doesn’t have the same instantly recognizable performance image as some German sports sedans, but it can be surprisingly quick. Used examples have also become accessible to younger enthusiasts looking for strong power without paying new-car prices. That combination has given the model a growing reputation for spirited driving.

17. Chevrolet Camaro

The Camaro offers plenty of power and dramatic styling, even if outward visibility has never been its strongest feature. That doesn’t seem to discourage some owners from driving with confidence in heavy traffic. Let's be honest here: if you were behind the wheel of a Camaro, you'd probably feel the urge to pass as well.

18. Lexus IS

The Lexus IS tends to attract buyers who want comfort but still appreciate a more athletic sedan. Its sharper styling and available performance trims give it more attitude than the traditional image of a quiet luxury car. Some drivers take full advantage of that personality when the highway gets moving.

19. Ford Mustang

Few cars are as closely associated with affordable performance as the Mustang. With so many on the road and so many engine choices, you’ll encounter everything from calm commuters to drivers who treat every merge as an opportunity. What's more, when a Mustang is following closely, its long hood and distinctive headlights make it easy to identify.

20. Porsche Cayenne

The Cayenne combines the size of a family SUV with performance worthy of its Porsche badge. That makes it easy for drivers to travel quickly without feeling like they’re pushing very hard. On the highway, one can close a gap with surprising speed and then settle directly into your mirror. It’s still carrying passengers and luggage, but that doesn’t mean its driver is all about practicality.
