Mazda’s Memorable Designs—For Better or Worse
Mazda has built some genuinely beautiful cars over the years, so it’s almost impressive when the company misses the mark. Sure, not every design can be a winner, but if you look back through Mazda’s history, you’ll find a handful of models that seemed determined to test your eyesight. We’re here to break down which designs did nothing but disappoint, and which ones are still ready for their close-up.
1. Mazda Carol
The Mazda Carol may have been practical for packed streets, but its styling never did it any favors. Its tiny proportions, awkward stance, and overly busy front end gave it a look that felt more flimsy than anything else. Okay, we can appreciate what it was built for, but that doesn’t mean it was pleasant to look at.
2. Mazda Laputa
Its name alone garnered attention, but as it turns out, that was more of a blessing than a curse. The last thing this one needed was more eyes on it. The Laputa had the tall, narrow shape common to kei cars, yet Mazda somehow made it look even more top-heavy and awkward than most of its rivals.
3. Mazda Verisa
The Verisa always looked like it was trying to be more upscale than it was. Its swollen body and soft detailing gave it a bland, slightly clumsy appearance, and instead of looking refined, it came across like a hatchback that couldn’t decide what path to take.
4. Mazda Premacy
We’ll admit it’s tricky with the first-generation Premacy. It had the difficult job of making a compact minivan seem stylish—and it failed. Its droopy nose, tall body, and narrow wheels looked unbalanced from nearly every side. Even if you put practicality on the pedestal, this one asks a lot from your imagination.
5. Mazda 121 Bubble Car
The so-called bubble-shaped Mazda 121 is one of those cars you remember for all the wrong reasons. Its stubby body gave it an inflated appearance that looked pretty weird, even by early 1990s standards (and that’s saying something). There’s a certain novelty to it now, but that doesn’t mean it’s attractive.
6. Mazda Bongo Friendee
The Bongo Friendee was useful, spacious, and clearly designed with function in mind. If only style were thrown in the mix. Its boxy profile made it look more like equipment than something you’d proudly drive off the lot.
7. Mazda Revue
Mazda’s Revue had some of the strangest proportions, and it’s hard not to wince at them. The short wheelbase and oddly pronounced trunk made the whole car mismatched; the more you squinted, the more it looked like the front and rear belonged to different vehicles.
8. Mazda Tribute Hybrid
The Tribute Hybrid wasn’t offensive in a clean way, which somehow made it even less memorable. Its bulky shape and uninspired front-end treatment left it dated almost as soon as it appeared. Basically, if you saw one in traffic, you wouldn’t stare with admiration.
9. Mazda Demio First Generation
The original Demio had an upright, narrow shape that prioritized interior room over any real sense of style. While that may have made practical sense, the result was a gawky profile. It wasn’t a disaster mechanically, but aesthetically, we all collectively left this one in the dust.
10. Mazda AZ-Offroad
The AZ-Offroad leaned heavily on tough little 4x4 character, and though that sounds good, it ended up looking a little cartoonish. Its tiny dimensions made it more amusing than rugged. Sure, some people love that kind of weirdness, but this one’s hard to defend.
Now, that’s not to say that Mazda had duds start to finish. Let’s dive into a few impressive models that still turn heads to this day.
1. Mazda Cosmo Sport
The model announced serious ambition from the moment it came on the scene. Its low roof, smooth bodywork, and crisp proportions gave it a polished look that still gets our motors running, and even now, you can see how clearly it set the tone for Mazda’s more elegant side.
2. Mazda RX-7 FD
Few Mazdas have aged as gracefully as the third-generation RX-7. It looked sleek without trying too hard to be dramatic. It’s not an easy line to toe, but they accomplished it with a flowing shape and carefully integrated details.
3. Mazda MX-5 Miata ND
The ND-generation MX-5 Miata brought a more athletic look to Mazda’s roadster formula. Its compact dimensions gave it a life of its own, and rather than chasing excess, Mazda gave it just enough edge to keep the design confident.
4. Mazda 787B
Okay, let’s call a spade a spade here: race cars aren’t always beautiful! However, you can’t say that about the 787B. The body sat low and wide, with every vent and contour contributing to a focused appearance. You don’t have to care about motorsport history to understand why this guy leaves such a strong impression.
5. Mazda CX-5 First Generation
When the first CX-5 arrived, it made almost put every other compact SUV to shame. Its sculpted sides and clean overall shape gave it a level of style that the segment didn’t usually offer—and drivers loved it. For a practical family vehicle, it carried itself with far more sophistication than most buyers expected.
6. Mazda Luce Rotary Coupe
The Luce Rotary Coupe showed how well Mazda could kick it up a notch. It had everything from a long profile and tidy detailing to a neatly composed front end. Together, they created a car that felt refined without becoming stiff.
7. Mazda RX-8
The RX-8 ventured off the beaten path a little, and that’s what made it stand out. Clever proportions gave it a sporty look that stayed distinctive without becoming too bold; the design remains one of Mazda’s most interesting achievements.
8. Mazda6 Second Generation
The second-generation Mazda 6 brought a sense of motion and polish to the midsize sedan class. The craziest part was how everything about it looked more expensive than it really was. If you saw one next to its rivals, it came across as the clear winner.

9. Mazda Vision Coupe
As a concept, the Vision Coupe gave Mazda room to be more expressive. In reality, the result was visually stunning. The long hood, low roofline, and beautifully controlled surfaces made it elegant from nearly every angle. Alright, sure, it never reached production in that exact form, but it showed just how sophisticated Mazda’s designs could become.
10. Mazda Millenia
The Millenia rarely gets mentioned as the pinnacle of class, but it deserves more credit. Its restrained luxury styling gave it a handsome presence that still holds up well. Instead of begging for attention, it earned it through proportion, balance, and a clear sense of confidence.
