Flashy Doesn’t Always Mean Safe
Choosing a car is more than picking a color and horsepower. It’s also about protecting yourself and your family. While some models excel in safety tests, others barely hang on, which is why it’s time to know which models consistently rank the lowest and highest in the safety department.
1. Dodge Charger HEMI 2WD (2022)
Bold presence and beastly performance. But safety? The Charger scored only "Acceptable" in key IIHS categories and lacks standard crash-avoidance features. The HEMI engine delivers power, but its older builds lack the structural protection expected in today’s sedans.
2. Mitsubishi Mirage G4 (2024)
This ultra-light sedan pulls drivers in with budget pricing and solid fuel savings. While the 2024 Mirage G4 does include standard AEB and pedestrian detection, it still received a "Marginal" rating in IIHS small-overlap crash tests. The car recorded 205 driver deaths per million, the highest rate reported.

3. 2019 Hyundai Accent
Accent pre‑2020 lacks advanced crash‑avoidance tech and earns marginal grades in side-impact. Limited structural reinforcement boosts affordability but undermines safety. For cautious buyers, it's better to opt for models with standard AEB and reinforced cabin design.
4. Dodge Challenger 2WD (2023)
Few cars feel this thrilling to drive—the Challenger’s powerful rear-wheel drive invites speed and attitude. Unfortunately, it earned only "Acceptable" crash ratings and lacks standard AEB. Muscle car status delivers the excitement, but that high-speed potential requires serious caution behind the wheel.

5. 2022 Jeep Renegade
The Renegade’s rugged appeal doesn’t tell the whole story. IIHS rated its passenger-side small-overlap crash “Acceptable,” and headlight quality varies by trim. While some versions offer forward-collision braking, it’s not standard across all models, making protection inconsistent depending on which trim you choose.
6. Chrysler 300 4WD (2018–2021)
The Chrysler 300 4WD isn’t safe either. Pre-2022 models lack key driver assistance features, scored poorly in small overlap crash tests, and haven’t kept pace with modern standards. Its safety systems were optional for too long.

7. Ford Mustang Convertible (2020–2022)
Convertibles bring thrill, but the Mustang logged only "Acceptable” scores for roof strength and structure integrity. Even newer models suffer from a lack of standard crash prevention tech. A head-turner for sure, but one that walks a tighter line on safety.

8. Nissan Altima (2017–2019)
This family-friendly favorite surprised many, with early models missing out on essential tech like AEB. It received mixed crash test scores in the passenger side tests, making it a midsize option with room for improvement, especially in versions before 2020.
9. Kia Forte (2022–2024)
Known for affordability and modern interiors, the Forte faced scrutiny after poor side-impact ratings and limited crash-avoidance features on trims prior to 2024. Newer models tend to fare better, but used ones usually lack essential protection.
10. Chevrolet Camaro Convertible (2021)
Fun invites crash concerns in the Camaro Convertible. Its open-top structure affects rigidity, and it lacks standard AEB. Safety ratings reflect limited roof strength, making rollovers and side collisions especially dangerous in older trims.
Now, if the first half made you clench the wheel a little tighter, don't worry—here come the real champions.
1. BMW X3 (2023)
Zero driver deaths per million make this compact luxury SUV a quiet powerhouse in safety. The 2023 model earned Top Safety Pick+ honors from IIHS with high scores across all crash categories and standard AEB. It just goes to show that safety and style can go hand in hand.
2. Lexus ES350 (2023)
Luxury takes the lead with the ES350’s spotless record; it consistently earns IIHS Top Safety Pick status. Every trim includes a full suite of advanced safety tech, including lane departure alert and pedestrian detection. Comfort doesn’t come at the cost of crash protection.

6. Nissan Murano 2WD (2023)

7. Toyota C-HR (2022)
This compact crossover scored a Top Safety Pick+ thanks to Toyota’s Safety Sense system. The 2023 model includes pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, and high-speed dynamic radar cruise control—all in a small, city-friendly package.
8. GMC Canyon Crew Cab 4WD (2023)
Among pickups, the Canyon stands out with strong crash test scores, especially in side-impact and roof strength. Its 2023 model includes a forward collision alert and lane departure warning, proving pickups can be tough and safe at the same time.
9. Volvo XC90 4WD (2023)
Swedish safety hits its peak in the XC90. This luxury SUV features Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving feature, along with a high-strength safety cage. Top IIHS marks and minimal injury risk ratings round it out as one of the safest family vehicles on the road.
