This specific era was the golden age of the family SUV boom, but it also happened to be a dark time for automotive engineering, complex electrical systems, and experimental build materials. What feels like a budget-friendly deal to transport your kids can rapidly turn into a permanent nightmare of endless tow trucks and eye-watering mechanic bills.
1. 2002–2006 Ford Explorer
If automatic transmissions had a propensity to go haywire while you drive, this generation of America’s most popular family hauler would be the poster boy. Along with a broken transmission, you’ll also likely see a crack right below the rear window glass due to a poorly designed plastic panel.

2. 2006–2007 Mercedes-Benz ML350
The best German luxury gets incredibly affordable when you buy it used, but this M-Class hides a disastrous secret. Internal engine gears are soft and prone to wearing down quickly, causing the engine to stall at high speeds and leaving you with a permanently lit check engine light.

No one can resist the allure of driving around in a brand-new Porsche SUV, but cooling system failure is almost guaranteed to happen. Engineers decided to use cheap plastic coolant lines that run right through the engine, which crack over time from the extreme heat.

This cabin cruiser drives great on back roads thanks to precise German engineering, but don’t expect parts of the car to actually last. Both the cooling system and electrical fuses are extremely weak and prone to failure.

This muscular domestic beast offered plenty of room for activities, but the build quality was remarkably subpar across the board. The central air-conditioning evaporator core loves to leak hidden deep inside the dashboard, forcing mechanics to completely remove the interior console just to swap out a cheap part. You will also likely battle persistent rust issues along the bottom of the doors and the rear wheel arches.

Subaru tried its hand at a larger, uniquely styled three-row vehicle, but this quirky experiment ended up being a massive headache for buyers.
